The BC25 is both an effective and handy instrument for reliably measuring the physical stress caused by high temperatures in combination with high humidity. This is because high humidity impairs the body's thermoregulation through evaporation of sweat. This significantly impairs subjective well-being and objectively increases the risk of heat damage, especially for athletes, as well as sick and elderly people.
Therefore, the BC25 with its sensitive sensor technology determines the 'heat index' (HI) and the 'perceived temperature' (WBGT index) in addition to the normal climate parameters such as air temperature, relative humidity, dew point and wet bulb temperature. The heat index and the so-called wet bulb globe temperature each provide information about the perceived temperature based on the measured air temperature and, above all, the relative humidity and other parameters, such as thermal radiation.
By means of the BC25's alarm functions for heat index and sensed temperature (WBGT), heat hazards can be prevented from the outset and the limits of the resilience at high temperatures can be defined. What does the heat index (HI) say?
The heat index, also called humidex, is an indicator developed by the US-American Steadman in the 1970s, which describes the joint influence of temperature and (high) humidity on the human body.
The higher the relative humidity, evaporation of the moisture (sweat) released through the skin is slower or more difficult, as the surrounding air can only absorb a small amount of additional moisture. Only with the help of this evaporation, however, is the human organism able to thermally regulate itself, especially during intense heat or physical exertion, in such a way that the body's core temperature remains at a healthy level. If this natural cooling mechanism is slowed down, the body can no longer properly dissipate the heat generated, which leads to so-called heat stress. Overheating or heat stroke can be the health consequences.
Even without physical exertion, high temperatures in combination with high humidity (sultry heat) are therefore generally perceived as unpleasant, whereas high temperatures with low humidity are quite bearable.
Sweating and the associated cooling effect are thus vital for both humans and many mammals alike as well as indispensable for physical well-being.
The international standard for climate influence on the human body: Wet Bulb Globe Temperature Index (WBGT Index)
The Wet Bulb Globe Temperature Index is a measure of climate totals that was developed by the US Army in the 1950s to specify the effects of the current climate on the human body.  
In contrast to the heat index, the WBGT includes wind speed, wet bulb temperature and radiation temperature (globe temperature) in addition to air temperature (dry bulb temperature) and humidity to assess outdoor heat exposure.
The wet bulb temperature (also known as the cooling limit temperature) is the lowest temperature that can be achieved purely by direct evaporative cooling. It is determined by wrapping a cotton cloth soaked in distilled water around the measuring tip or mercury ball of a thermometer and then exposing it to the environment. The cooling effect achieved by the evaporating water can thus be measured and simulated under these conditions for the perspiring human body.
The radiation temperature, which is also included, is measured inside a thin-walled matt black hollow sphere (globe), which reacts to infrared heat radiation from the sun. The WBGT index is thus another indicator for determining the influence of climate on the human organism, but it is even more meaningful than the heat index because it includes other parameters in the calculation. Established as an international standard, it is described in ISO 7243 and DIN EN 27243.
